I asked my bank, out of interest, about the time it takes cheques to clear, and I got the interesting response that there really is no set clearance period, and if a cheque bounces even after a year they will still take the money out of your account.

Obviosly there is a test of reasonableness which you could apply, and they might refund you for a certain amount. My advice: never trust cheques, unlesss you can afford to lose the money.
