Thanks for the information. You turned my attention to the switch in the door where I found that all the wires leading into it had lost their insulation and were in contact with each other. After replacing the switch from the used parts pile it works as it should- that is when the key is able to turn the tumblers in the door lock (about 50% of the time). I am going to swap out the mechanism from the passenger's door tomorrow and I should be good to move on to sorting out the next problem. Again, thanks.
