I will need further info to help.

Which lights exactly come on...instrumentation lighting? Is electrical system stock and unmodified*? Are there any other symptoms?

* ...like maybe the PO wired the instrumentation lights in parallel with the brake lights so that he could see if they were working...as unreliable as they can be with the original hydraulic switches...creative!
