Air Flow Meter 200 1989

I have an 89 240 that will not stay running or even idle. I took it to a mechanic and he tried the air flow meter with a known good one and it did not fix the problem. When the air flow meter is disconnected the car will start and idle but does not have enough power to drive. As soon as you reconnect the air flow meter the car dies. Before he starts replacing all sorts of parts I would like to know if anyone has experienced this problem and knows exactly what the problem could be? The mechanic thinks it could be the computer but before I spend $300 - $400 I would like to see if it is anything simple.

Thanks for your help in advance.
