1981 GL (240) ((MANUAL)) can't get car in gear, please help

1981 GL (240) manual 4-speed with overdrive - had a problem a few nights ago with overdrive, it would work but you would hear a loud moaning noise from under the hood. now, the car cannot get into gear at all. it started sporadically over the past few days and has gotten progressively worse to now, where i can't get it into gear. from a dead stop, you will try to put it in first and drive away, but the wheels don't move at all. it seems like it just can't get in gear at all. the noise coming from under the hood is like a moaning or really soft scraping. when you put it in first, it makes this noise and it sounds like it's whirring or spinning. when you try to put it in second gear, it does the same, except the whirring or spinning noise is twice as fast. when i rev the engine, the rpm meter doesn't seem to do anything out of the ordinary. about a week ago or so, someone bumped me really good from the front while they were parallel parking. a vacuum hose came right off after this and i had to put it back on to start the car. i am thinking that the two are also possibly related, in that the impact could have messed a mount or bracket up so that things are not properly engaging now. the car has 107k miles, so although it's an '81, I have not had transmission-type problems before and i think it's too few miles for _everything_ to be failing now all at once.

Please help if you have seen this before or know what it may be...
