Power steering issue - am I on the right track?

bob there's some differing opinions about this as i recently found out. someone just posted about stiff steering. i responded saying my volvo has always had stiff steering.

numerous other people suggested a problem with the steering rack. someone said he could turn the steering wheel from full lock end to end with one finger during a standstill. i definitely can NOT do that.

however, my steering has not gotten stiffer or anything nor made any strange noises over the years (since 97) that it has been like this.

so it appears to be inconclusive.
