J/K. Torque at high rpms is better than torque at low rpms, it's just a little harder to utilize in everyday driving.
HP takes the gearing out of the equation as a factor, makes the power outputs more comparable. A VW TDi engine, for example, is better understood by it's 90 HP rating than it's 150 ft lb rating. Because it only revs to 4000 rpm a higher revving 90 hp/90 ft lb gas engine can keep up, and a higher revving 150 ft lb gas engine will leave it behind.
