I adjusted my valves for the first time a couple months ago.
You have some great advice from everyone here, and I'm so inexperienced I can not add any more, except that the best way to do it is to find someone who has done it before and ask them to help you. And it doesn't have to be a Volvo person only. Adjusting the valves on any old pushrod motor is not that different (as far as I can tell), so if you know anyone who can drop by for a couple hours to help you, it may be what you need.
One caveat, my dad informed me that the only way to adjust valves is with the engine running. Which he proceeded to do with my old datusn pickup. I didn't do it this way, I recommend that you not do it either. Nice strong oil pump in that truck though, still have most of the oil stains in his garage.
