Sounds a bit like a bad Radio Suppression Relay. There should be two relays attached to the front side of the radiator overflow bottle. If so, the second one is for the aux electric radiator fan. If there IS two, you can swap the wire connections between the two. If it then runs good, you found the problem.

Note: This is the way my 1990 740 non-turbo is wired.
