87 240 tail light qustion

Hi and happy holidays--on my 87 244--when I bought it--I changed the tail lights to pre 86 tail lights--and they worked fine in the car. I just had the paasenger side taillight damaged and replaced it with a after market tail light assemby from FCP Groton-and the new one I bought was for 86 and up. Installed the new one and everything seems wacky with the brake lights on the old taillight that I didnt replace. Wondering now if perhaps I cant use one newer and one older type ciruit board on the same car. Can anyone shed light on this--as I think I may have to order a new assembly for the other side to solve this--or-what does anyone else think. Thanks and merry xmas to all
