The early model years of the 700 series were known for breaking the front crossmember. I think the crossmember was re-inforced for the 1987 modle year. The dealer may not be able to tell you because they will only sell the improved version.
To replace the front crossmember you must support the engine from a support resting across the front fender wells, and drop the crossmember. This is like replacing the engine oil pump with the engine in the car. That job is well detailed in the 700/900 FAQ. Go there and read up. The shops quote about 4 hours for this repair, but it will probably take you anywhere from 8 to 16 hours depending on your shop, tools, and personal abilities. I can replace a 700 series engine oil pump in 3.5 hours. It took me almost 8 hours the first time.
