I essentially agree, with the exception that cam changes could affect the equation.
What makes things worse in a lot of applications is that the large displacement engine is often assmebled with a thicker head gasket in order to keep the CR within reasonable limits, this destroys the squish affect, reducing necessary turbulence in the the combustion chamber, reducing combustion efficiency. In other cases the head is ported by the owner or some local shop that is supposedly real good at doing chevies. The result is a head that flows less than stock and and engine that has less power than a good stock bore engine.
