Radio Problem 200

I have an 87 240 dl with a cranky radio. I cant figure it out. Sometimes it works, sometimes it scans aimlessly, without stopping. When it gets in the scanning mood, pulling the live wire of the battery and replaceing it fixes it. The tape player only rewinds, or fastforwards, doesnt play. Does anyone know what might be causeing this, I'm getting tired of putting batteries in a boombox in the passenger seat. Thank Yall
