Anyhow, so what you are saying is you've got the thin red wire hooked up as well as the blue ground wire. Which must be the case as the idiot lights are on.
What you are lacking is the post to which the thick red wire attaches?
Probably wrong alternator (haven't seen one like you describe for Volvo).
(You have compared it to the old one to confirm.)
