worn out shift linkage - how to fix? 200 1989

I had this problem on my '88 wagon. It turned out that the clutch
was dragging. Accelerating from a stop in 4th several times burned
off whatever was causing the clutch to drag - the clutch then needed
to be adjusted, but the problem was fixed. Clutch drag can also
be caused by a rusted or worn pilot bearing. If your clutch is
dragging (not disengaging fully) you'll probably also get a clunk
when shifting into reverse.
