stamp in top of B20E block? 1800

I always understood it to be the other way around, that the bores were final honed to provide proper wall to skirt clearances. Most european engines including the poor Brits used this method. My machinist will not bore and hone an engine block unless he has the pistons in hand and they come back marked as to which cylinder they go in.
