I had the same problem in warmer weather. I'm not sure what the part is called, maybe it is what you called the "safety" but it is a metal latch mechanism on the door that pivots onto the holder on the body when the door is closed. I tried lubricating it with 3-in-1 oil but it still didn't work. The door wouldn't lock with the key and the inside lifter wouldn't budge. I took carburator cleaner and sprayed the latch on end of door and cleaned off all the heavy oil and lubrication then sprayed it with a light-weight 10w30 and it worked fine after that. I think the latch mechanism on my car wasn't flipping closed all the way when the door was closed because of grease on it that was too heavy and inhibiting it from pivoting freely. If you have a lot of grease try spraying it off with carb cleaner really well and then use WD40.
