I hadn't considered the engine torque factor, but that makes good sense.
Also, the engine moves to the left with reverse torque (as I found when checking motor mount play, while holding the brakes), which may have favored the loose duct.
John may just have a big crack in the ducting (hidden underneath) which gets pulled open under acceleration torque engine movement (which, in turn, may be increased by bad motor mounts).
