You're probably right about the source of the noise, but WD-40 is a lousy choice of lubricant. It's basically kerosene in a spray can, and while it's great for penetrating, it doesn't stay around long. White lithium grease in a spray can is amazing stuff for creaky doors, hood hinges, etc. Wal-Mart sells it in their store brand for $1.50 a can.
