You can apply either gasket dry. I use a very thin coat of blue RTV on both sides of each of these gaskets. Make sure your surfaces are very clean first.
Also, I apply a little grease to the water pump pipe seal and top seal, so it slides into place without folding either of these over. These cars leak too much as it is from the top of the pump, so anything you can do to ensure a proper installation there helps.
