You probably also have a dirty throttle body. There's an air bypass adjustment (idle speed / black plastic screw) on the bottom side of the housing. It adjusts the minimum engine speed when the idle air control is closed. If the throttle plate and bore is blocked with carbon, there's not enough total air to keep the engine running at idle...common problem
