Do you have an owner's manual? Call 1-800-25-VOLVO and get one. There is an online URL but I can't seem to remember it.
Other good books to have:
(1) Haynes Automotive REpair Manual, 240 1976 thru 1993. Not good for everything, but good for pictures and many details.
(2) Bentley Volvo Service Manual 240 1983 thru 1993. Very very good.
Look for these two on eBay or from FCPGroton, a Brickboard advertiser.
(3) The Volvo Service Manual (Green book) for 1985 240,260, Wiring Diagrams. This is not a cheap book, but very very informative and easy to read.
Your 1985 is a transition model. Older type body, badging for DL or GL, no numbers (245 = Series 200, 4 cylinders, 5 doors). Newer type engine, B230F instead of the B23F. Different engine computer controls, a/c compressor, crankshaft pulley, and other things. This makes the Owner's Manual and the Volvo Wiring Diagrams manual more important than for a non-transition model.
The speedometer you have is a mechanical drive. 1986+ got electronic speedo. The mechanical speedo has a problem: The plastic drive gears that make the odometer operate develop cracks over time and loose their grip on a steel shaft. That makes the odometer run and slip and be intermittent.
Your clock may show 60,000 but you should verify it by other means. Any old repair records? Conversation with the PO (previous owner)? After all, 60,000 miles in 18 years is an average of 300 miles a month.
Switching to synthetic engine oil. Synthetic will loosen up and put into suspension lots of oil residual that may be helping to close up minor leak spots. Go to synthetic only if you know the engine has no oil leaks or seeps.
Otherwise you may see leaking
Some seals are easy fixes, like the three on the front of the engine. Others, like the rear main seal, are a really big big deal, requires dropping the tranny.
Look in the FAQs (700/900 but there is a LOT of stuff good on 240s) and in the Archives for something called a "Zero Mile List". It is a list of things to check and /or do on a car for which you have no idea of the maintenance history. Such as how long ago the timing belt was changed?
Flush the tranny, look in the FAQs, it's easy. Change it and the power steering to synthetic.
Flush the brake fluid, too. Replace only with DOT-4 fluid. Flush the cooling system, use green antifreeze 50/50 with steam distilled water.
A well-cared-for 240 can last an amazing number of years. 400,000 miles or more.
Good Luck,
Bob
