The tranny sounds like the tip of the iceberg, I'd be more interested in the habits of the owner first, was the car let go for so long that the tranny finally made it undrivable? If it is a standard and the engine sounds good and the owner sounds somewhat credible then maybe it is worth a shot, have fun!
