No advice at all on the crossmember at all - other than I've whipped one up before from scratch when I put an M41 in my old BW35 equipped 1800E - and it wasn't terribly hard with access to a decent selection of scrap metal, a grinder, and a welder.
The transmission has room to come right off the back of the engine, bellhousing attached. Just place a small chunk of wood (2X4) between the back of the head and the firewall to prevent the engine from leaning back too far, then unbolt the rear creossmember and let that back end come down as much as it wants to.
