While the rack boot can be easily replaced, you can only hope that the innards were not exposed for too long to dirt and moisture. Get a rack boot kit at an auto store at a cost of about $15.
If the rack needs to be replaced, you'll know it. Cost will be about $350-400 for a rebuild.
