83 244GL Overdrive function 200 1983

I have had my Volvo for 3 years now. In the beginning, it had no problems going into overdrive. Now it is very picky. Seems to mostly go in when it is cold. Even then I have to engage the button a couple times before it actually shifts. I hear the relays click everytime and the transmission change tones (like it wants to shift). Any suggestions on how to make this shift more reliable? Thanks in advance for your help.
