Thanks guys -
I'm planning for three hours on the dyno
It cost me about $1200.00 for my head work. That included machining for 46/38 valves, new guides, hot tanking, magnaflux, cutting valve seats, and porting my DCOE manifold. On the intakes, the guides are flush with the roof. They were grinded down.
My results (according to the paper from the head guy) was:
Best flow stock intake was 190 cubes at 28" water at .4 lift
best flow ported intake was 222 cubes at 28" at .4 lift
best ext stock was 148 at .6 lift
best ext ported was 172 at .6 lift
He did indicate that he had to "rig" his superflow 600 to adapt my head, so the cubes may be off, but their relativity is probably correct.
The problem I have is that I also did other major performance changes at the same time. My time at my local track improved dramatically, but I can't say for sure why.
The improvement in time was about 3 seconds on a 2 mile road course. Again, this was with a new rear end ratio (from 4.56 to a 4.88), new lightweight flywheel (about 7 pounds),lightweight clutch, and on slicks. Without slicks, it was about a second slower. There were a couple other mods here and there too ;-)
Back to the dyno day, I'm going to be as prepared as possible...kinda like building a whole house in 5 hours like they do on TV sometimes!
I plan to use a copper head gasket, because it's reusable (at least for my test). I'm not going to monkey around with a lot of time optimising each head. I know that's best, but I wont have the time. They all will have the same jetting (even though I hope to be on FI by then. I may change the exhaust pipe and header..but how long it takes to cool off between runs may be a problem. Finally, I will test at least two heads, the ported one form chevy guy, and the mystery ported one (Hey John, do you leave a secret mark on heads you've done?)
I keep planning on throwing a web site up, but every spare minute right now is in the race car. I'm a little behind the clock now. My first event is a SVRA at road america in mid May, and I've just completed replacing the two qtr panels and ass piece, and will be replacing all the front suspension this weekend. If time just simply gets too short, I'll run the engine as is, and may delay the dyno until after the race. My ultimate goal is to be done so that I can be as competitive as possible for the Volvo race at VIR in July.
