960 'interference engine' 900

I am generally curious what the benefit of Volvo making an interference engine is? If the result of belt failure in an interference engine is disaster, and a non interference failure only requires a belt replacement, what is the benefit to us as owners, and to Volvo? How are the cam chaft, valves, etc driven differently with a non interference engine?
