Pistons about .010" down from the top of the block is the norm around these parts. The difference between the headgaskets is visible to the naked eye, you don't really need to take it apart to find out. Measuring piston to head clearance using lead is a maintainence procedure for GM's 2-stroke Locomotive engines.
