Anchoring soundproofing material may not be such a bad guess it seems to me. While pulling parts recently on a dead 122, I found that some of the original soundproof matting on the firewall was held up and in place by rubber grommets through the firewall (holes), and through holes in the matting material.

Perhaps the material is now gone, and the grommets have now fallen out or away in those floor pan areas?
