I replaced the heater & radiator hoses today on my daughter's 740 turbo and headed into the mountains to check the cooling system(we live in Denver, Co.). As I started to pull the hills the turbo would quickly overboost and the turbo gauge would push far into the yellow. I found just tiny changes in pedal pressure would cause the turbo gauge to rapidly climb. If I let it go the needle would point straight down and the motor would start to cut out.
The car is an 87 740 Turbo with 130,000 miles w/Automatic.
I'm a pretty good wrench but I don't know much about Volvo turbos. Where do I start in diagnosing this? Is this indicative of a waste gate issue or something else?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Pete
