Do I really need to remove the distributor? 200 1980

Ok yet another simple question as I proceed with the head gasket replacement on my 1980 245DL...The Haynes manual says to remove the distributor prior to pulling the head. I removed the cap to verify the rotor is pointing to cylinder #1 and did all the other steps...ready to remove the head bolts now...but I don't see why I need to remove the distributor. Does that apply to B21F engines? Thanks
