I often go back to my posts to get a calibration on what happens to most of the cars.
Just one other possibilty before you tear into the engine, It may be deposits on the valve guide holding the valve open? Try an "Italion-tune-up". Put the transmission in a low gear and run the engine at 4000 to 5000 RPM for about 5 minutes. This has been known to clear deposits enough to get things working right again. Particullary in a car that sees a lot of "gentle" driving.
