Engine Removal.....A/C Compressor.... 200 1983

Here is a quick run down on how I do the pan gasket in the shop:

1. Break the subframe bolts loose
2. Put the car up in the air and support the engine with a pole jack under the crank dampner
3. Remove the subframe bolts completely
4. Reomove the left engine mount completely, remove the right one from the subframe.
5. Remove the bolts for the rear control arm mounts, undo the steering coupler, remove the screw for the brake junction block. With all of this stuff removed you will be able to both pry the subframe down and lever it forward because you turned the control arms loose in the back where they bolt to the frame. The subframe will be held in place by the struts but it will also put stress on the two P/S lines that are still attached to the P/S rack.
So do be careful so as not to stress these lines too much.
6. Pull all of your pan bolts and you should be able to drop the pan down and rotate it out. It will try to hang up on the windage tray in there but you should be able to finese it out.
7. Reassembly is a straight forward reversal of the above procedure, don't you just love that line?

If replacing the gasket is all you are going to do there then you can actually snake the gasket in and out but it tends to be such a pain in the butt that I just go ahead and pull the pan out and do it right. If you look at the gasket you will see that there is a place where it is put together like a jig saw puzzle and that it has a piece of masking tape over it. Undo it at this joint, drop the pan down, clean it up, and snake the new gasket in. Put the puzzle piece back together, put a glob of silicone on it for good measure and bolt it together.

Also, if you are going to pull the tranny out then go ahead and do that and then work on your oil pan while the trans is out. Having the trans out while doing an oil pan makes it a lot easier.

While my method above is based around using air tools and a hoist I have no doubt that you can adapt it or parts of it for use on the ground with jack stands and a good floor jack.

Good luck Rule 308
