Starting problem with Volvo 240

I have been reading some of the other threads and many of the indications I get with my volvo make me think it might be the fuel pump check valve. Where is it located and can you just replace it by it's self or is it part of the fuel pump? I have also noticed right after the engine starts and dies for the first and second time that I hear the fuel pump running rapidly in the background. Is that a symptom of a bad check valve?
