i guess the phrasing on the title was ill-advised - I do want the car to last but it's hard to actually pull off the repiars. The shop did make it sound like winter tires had no dry road drawbacks or none that I would notice anyhow and that surprised me. On the other hand my current tires (53,000 on snows) might be so bad that any tire will be a great improvement. The shop by the way recommend Cooper Trendsetter SE which i hadn't heard anything about.
