I seem to remember the longer part toward the flywheel too, but I've done a lot more air-cooled VW clutches than anything else. Most of my manuals state that the marking for flywheel goes toward the flywheel (duh)or, failing that, the damper springs go towarrd the flywheel. Having no damper springs I sugggest you "offer it up" to the flywheel and see if you have any clearance. Usually the transmission side is more restricted due to the cover needing to move ina an out.
No springs is good in my opinion. Use your leg to smooth the take-up instead of springs. Also assembly is stronger and you will have more positive shifts. Hills may be a little tricky until you get used to it but I use solid plates whenever I can get them in all my cars.
