Premium not necessary here in Northern Nevada (4000 feet +) but if I go to Scramento...!
My 2 cents: Engine could require higher octane if it is carboned up. Do a tune-up first!!!!! Once everything is working as well as it can THEN mess with timing to find the optimum point, as described.
Excessively lean, rich or out of balance carbs will mess with timing requirements. Bad plugs or incorrect heat range will also mess with it. Poor heat exchange from icky coolant/bad thermostat/plugged radiator will mess with "optimum" timing etc, etc, etc...
