Upper a-arm bolts/alignment ? 140-160 1974

How do you get at the upper a-arm bolts? 1974 145e. With the car jacked off the ground I can't get a 3/8 universal joint through to solidly purchase the bolt head.
Haynes sez that's the method. I don't want to do it on the ground: pressure on the mount, isn't there? Can I loosen it on the ground, (on jack, tire off)?

I need to add a bit of positive caster to the drivers side. It drifts to the left with no dragging brakes or soft tires. Steering is lighter than I like.
