pulling the cover is the best way to get out all the fluid. Having a new gasket handy is a good idea.

Excpet that it can be rather messy. Here, you can buy a suction gun with a long hose (looks like a huge syringe) pretty cheap. It gets about 90%+ of the fluid out. Problem is, it may or may not get any metal shavings out.
