Yes, the endplay of the cam is important. Most think that simply mounting the worn brass plate the other way around (because it usually wears more on the backside)is as good as installing a new one, wrong !!!
The B18 had steel plates that don't wear nearly as much as the brass counterparts of the B20. Shimms can be used to get the correct clearance altough I have never seen any in a B18/20.
Indeed, the rocker geometry seems to be developed for the A-cam and has never been optimized for the B20E and F engines.
