With care and work, you can remove a small internal "C" clip at the very front of the valve assembly. This permits you to pull the valve and armature out (I think...). Then you can wash out the black gunk.

Yeah, maybe the small roll pin is involved...

It has been at least 15 years since I've done one of these, so the memory's fading...... But, in the early days, I cleaned out a buncha gummed up solenoids.
