My daughter's trusty '89 740 has become "hard to start"..
Its an automatic, 230k miles on the clock. "Vicki" is her daily driver, backed up by the faithful Honda Accord.
There are two separate symptoms.
One : Apparently the neutral safety switch is mal-adjusted, I guess, so she will start in neutral, but not Park. This is a common malady and a simple adjustment is the cure.
Two : I think the cold starting is OK, but not the warm. And this condition is erratic, I suspect a loss of fuel pressure at times.
The trouble is, I have ten years a experience as a B mechanic with Saab, VW, Honda, M109, (there is MUCH I do not know), she knows very little, as do most drivers.
She complains about fuel economy - but really has no idea what it is. I guess a 740 automatic should do about 20 to 25 mpg - not as good as the Mercedes 300D. the A2 Diesel averaged 50 mpg for 100,000 miles.
