Horn wires morph into steering box hell 120-130

There is a tube brazed into the worm housing cover that keeps all your gear lube from pouring out. The tube is only a foot or so long and much smaller than the hollow steering shaft. So that is why it is very unlikely to go down the shaft and out the hole in the end!

Some PO of my 122 went and cut off the wire at the coupler. Not leaving well enough alone, I attempted to replace the grommets only to find that one of the bolts holding the box to the frame horn had siezed.
Pulled the output arm so I could manuver the box and bolt out of the hole. OK, but attempting to drive out the siezed bolt bent it. Cutting off and using a punch did no good. Shop couldn't get it either! Shop did, however, make a surprisingly well placed hole in the bolt (four inches mostly centered! WOW, he's got a good eye). After apologizing that he couldn't get the remains out, I took it and slowly used larger bits until I could drive the remains out (spiral shaped, very odd).

Being the thourough sort, I then proceeded to open the box to inspect the innards (in for a dime...) Sure enough, the seals were bad and the oil was water and dirt contaminated. Hey, is there supposed to be a plug or bush on the upper end of the shaft where the horn wire runs through? Maybe I'll leave well enough alone on that one.

Oh, yeah. I had to get the box off because the flange at the coupler wouldn't come off the shaft. Well, of course, the flange has to come off toe pull the shaft and replace the seal.
Not having my press is becoming a real pain. The stupid flange is eccentric and none of my pullers will work because they want to "center" on the flange which, obviously, leaves the center of the puller half on the shaft and half on the flange.

Nuts.

I suppose I must now either dig my press out of storage or have an adaptor made to get the flange off. Well, dang. I just realized that I have a bearing splitter with threaded holes for a puller. Hmmmmm.

Oh, horn wire. That should be easy to thread in there with the end cover off (not recommended for in-car unless you really enjoy gear oil messes or you are interested in changing it out!).

The simplest things...

Mike!
