Emergency Radiator Tech Tip 700

Ok...so I spent two days replacing weepy hoses on my 780 (the PRV has a LOT of hoses), and went out of town on Saturday. About 100 miles out of where I was going, my radiator formed a nice little crack just below the upper hose connection (to be expected on old plastic tanked radiators). Luckily, GEICO will to you to your nearest dealer free of charge (mine happened to be in Vegas) so the tow was free. Well, once there, in a town with no foreign anything ;o), I called around and had NAPA order one, which, had all the right connections, but was not wide enough by around 2 inches. So needless to say, I had to abandone the idea of going home with a new radiator and some peace of mind that it wouldn't crack again. So what I ended up doing was going to the local Wal-Mart and buying some 4 minute JB Weld. I then took a wire toothbrush I had and cleaned up the crack area for the JB. Applied (sure does smell like dog doo) and within about 15 minutes (why is it called 4 minute?) was back in business. May be a ghetto fix for the moment, but it got me home over 300 miles away :o). From now on, I will always have some JB with me, and so should anyone else with an old radiator, could save you a lot of headaches when traveling.

Best to all
Nick
