Valve adjustment sequence 444-544

Hi;

I have adjusted valves many times on different older Volvos although I must say I am not an expert in the field. My comment goes to the sequence described for adjusting the valves. I have learned to do it this way:

1. Turn the motor by hand until the valves of cyl 4 shift, i.e. exhaust just up and intake starting to go down. Adjust then both valves of cyl 1 according to book.

2. Turn motor until valves of cyl 2 shift, and then adjust both valves of cyl 3.

3. Repeat for cyl 4 (adjust when valves of cyl 1 shift) and cyl 3 (adjust when valves of cyl 2 shift)

This should give absolutely full cam clearance for the valves to be adjusted. And, of course, always adjust on warm engine.

The reason for your clickety clack might just be that you have adjusted one valve without being completely free from the cam lobe due to your described way which is different from what I have learned and also always seen described in Volvo workshop manuals.

Just a theory, but....

Good luck!

Ola.
