Automatic shift lock stuck? 200 1991

Believe it or not, the Swedes are sometimes remarkably bad automobile designers(blower fan location anyone?) and the shift lock release is actually located INSIDE the shift mechanism! It was, however, marked with white lettering at one time but with time the letters have faded.

Now I just have to figure out why its happening.
