I like that! Turn on the cell phone to light up your instrument panel, great thinking.
The problem is probably in the light switch itself. The whole switch pulls out of the dash easily(?) and can be replaced with a newer one. You might play with the switch to make sure the external contacts are clean - the wires that go to the lights.
Do the panel lights work with just the parking lights on? Might be easier than using the cell phone.
