Why run prememum fuel?

Well then, just call me Stupid!! :-) I have an 82 244 Turbo with an M46od that I have checked more times than I can remember. Running the same 180 miles of Interstate 75 in Ohio I can consistantly get almost 2 more miles to the gallon on 89 octane (24+)than I can get with 87 (22+).

It doesn't seem to run any better or be quicker but when I crunch the numbers the results are consistantly the same.
