Trick to removing rear view mirror?

First part of the question, from memory: the plastic stays with the mirror, at least until you get it down from the roof. Just grab the mirror firmly and pull down. Think like a vandal. It is a ball and spring-loaded socket joint.

Removing the trim cover is easier when you can see the tabs and barbs from the back of the mirror mount.

No suggestion on part B of your question. Only hearsay about SEM paints for plastic highly praised.
